Meet the
Recovery happens in relationship. The quality of the clinical team — their training, their experience, and the culture they create — is the single most important variable in what a treatment experience actually feels like and what it produces.
At Numa Recovery Centers, our team is built around a straightforward conviction: the people providing care should understand addiction from the inside as well as the outside. Numa was founded by people in recovery. Many of our clinical and support staff share that experience. That is not incidental — it is the foundation of a therapeutic environment where clients feel genuinely understood, not managed.
Our clinical program is led by licensed physicians, therapists, and mental health professionals with specific expertise in addiction medicine, dual diagnosis treatment, and the particular challenges of early recovery. Every treatment plan at Numa is developed, reviewed, and overseen by credentialed clinicians — not generalists filling seats, but specialists who have chosen this work.
Dr. Ariella Morrow, MD serves as our Medical Director, bringing Board Certification in Internal Medicine and a Master’s degree in Public Health to her role overseeing all medical detox protocols and clinical decision-making at Numa. Dr. Morrow practices addiction medicine and internal medicine in Los Angeles and is directly involved in the care of our most complex cases — those presenting with significant medical comorbidities, high-acuity withdrawal, or dual diagnosis conditions requiring physician-level psychiatric oversight.
Her involvement is not administrative. She is a working clinician whose expertise shapes the standard of medical care across all three of our Los Angeles locations.
Numa was built by people who have been through addiction and recovery themselves. That origin shapes everything — from the language used in intake conversations to the culture of accountability and honesty that runs through our programs.
Clients frequently describe the experience of arriving at Numa and immediately sensing that the people around them understand what they are going through — not theoretically, not from a textbook, but from lived experience. That recognition matters clinically. It reduces the shame that keeps people from being honest about their experience, and honesty is the prerequisite for effective treatment.
We do not believe that lived experience replaces clinical training — our team holds both. But we do believe that clinical training alone, without the perspective that comes from personal recovery, produces a different and in important ways less effective therapeutic environment.
Our licensed therapists and counselors work directly with clients throughout their time at Numa — in individual sessions, group therapy, and family work. They are trained in evidence-based modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family systems therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing.
Each client is matched with a primary therapist who is responsible for developing and maintaining their individualized treatment plan from admission through discharge. That relationship — consistent, focused, and built on clinical trust — is the therapeutic core of residential treatment at Numa.
Our therapists hold licensure through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and the Medical Board of California, as applicable to their discipline, and maintain continuing education requirements in addiction and dual diagnosis treatment.
Safe, effective detox and the management of co-occurring mental health conditions require physician and psychiatric expertise. Our medical and psychiatric staff provide 24/7 clinical coverage during the detox phase, conduct psychiatric evaluations for all clients with co-occurring mental health diagnoses, manage psychiatric medications where clinically indicated, and monitor physical health throughout the residential stay.
For clients presenting with alcohol or benzodiazepine dependence, high-acuity opioid withdrawal, or complex dual diagnosis presentations, physician involvement is not occasional — it is continuous and directly integrated into the treatment plan.
The therapeutic work of recovery does not happen only in scheduled sessions. It happens in the hallways, at meals, in the evenings, and in the small moments of a residential stay when clients are processing what came up in therapy, navigating discomfort, or simply trying to get through a difficult hour.
Our support staff and recovery coaches — many of whom are in long-term recovery themselves — are present throughout the day and evening to provide encouragement, accountability, and the kind of peer-level understanding that clinical staff alone cannot always offer. They are an integral part of the therapeutic environment at Numa, not an afterthought.
Numa Recovery Centers operates three locations in Los Angeles — La Brea, 832 Mariposa, and 826 Mariposa — each staffed by the same clinical team and held to the same standard of care. Our flagship location at 826 Mariposa serves as the primary point of contact for new admissions. Take a virtual facility tour to see the environment our team works in.
Every member of our clinical team operates within a framework of licensing, accreditation, and ongoing clinical supervision that ensures the standard of care at Numa meets and exceeds the requirements of California’s Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).
We hold ourselves to these standards not because we are required to, but because our clients deserve treatment delivered by people who are qualified, supervised, and accountable. When you or someone you love is in treatment, that accountability is not a formality — it is the foundation of safe and effective care.
